- Saturnalia's final year,
- How much you hate seeing your relatives over the holidays,
- Whatever happened to Arabian,
- Giving yourself over to absolute pleasure,
- Whether Paul Walker still breathes.

Arabian: still crazy, just somewhere else

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, wow. Her Tumblr is a hot mess. A CW show seems like a fitting fandom for her, though?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm happy that she's happy in her new fandom(s). I'm happy that she's found new friends and associates/friends/responders that appreciate what she does with her free time.

I met a real-life arabian about two or three years ago at a Harry Potter screening - 38 years old and life consisted of obsessing over tv/movie boyfriends. She spent her free time doing everything fandom related and would act as though she knew the actors/actresses in real life. This wasn't just for Harry Potter, but also included Doctor Who, Hunger Games, and anything Joss Whedon. If you didn't agree with her she felt you were personally attacking her, as though the characters in Buffy were real class mates and Slytherin was the only house you could support.

I'm happy that this real-life arabian is enjoying her life - she appeared happy and fulfilled. But a part of me wonders how much of it is escapism and she believes that she's actually attending fighting evil along with the Scooby gang, traveling with the Doctor, and was really sorted into Slytherin house when she attended Hogwarts. In a way, it also is sad... (does that make sense?)

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
It does! Yeah, I do kind of feel sorry for her...and while I'm not unhappy that she was forced to step down as mod, I do with Paradox (and by extension we) had come out looking better. It wasn't handled by the fandom as gracefully as it could have been.

There's a fine line between fandom-as-healthy-outlet-and-hobby and fandom-as-unhealthy-escape. Arabian crossed it, but that's more deserving of pity than scorn. On the other hand, the way she dragged the rest of us down with her was beyond inappropriate.

I always miss the best fandom meltdowns. And it's so hard to predict who is going to have these awesome meltdowns, in order to get in and watch now.

Saturnalia

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
does anyone know why this is the last one? is interest just fizzling out that much, or are the mods tired of the comm, or is there some other reason?

on that note <3 to the mods for all their effort and for putting up with the crazy

Re: Saturnalia

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
I think literally all the mods have moved on. I can't think of a single mod that is still active in the fandom. weasleytook is still a great mod, tho.

Twelve dates late, but here's your answer:

This is the last one because it's fizzled out so much. Each year since the first one, we've seen about half the number of participants as the previous year. This year will do better than that, but only because it's been promoted so hard as the last one.

(Seriously, the first 2/3 of sign-ups, it was like 5 people.)

Does anyone else think it's creepy that CAPTCHA now uses pictures of house numbers for their spam checks?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
I hate having to type out strings of numbers. Hate it.

But yes, it's also creepy.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
I think so too. Agree with all of your words.

I like the option where you have to do a math equation instead. One of the sites I frequent uses it, but I cannot remember which at the moment. If you cannot do a simple math equation then maybe it's best your thoughts aren't shared on the Internet.

When was the last time you watched the Big Bang Theory?

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Last spring, maybe. A friend told me to watch a specific episode, so I did. I had no desire to watch any more after that.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't long enough ago. Never long enough.

I don't think my coworkers understand my relationship with the show, tbh. One moment I'm all "oh yeah, can't stand that" and then the next minute I'm jumping in to answer a vague question like "remember the episode where..." with an incredibly detailed response.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
My problem is that sitcoms tend to get tiresome because they recycle jokes and situations with little character development and plot progression. So maybe two seasons if I'm being generous...

Out and proud, it was last night.

I was hoping for a new ep, but apparently the next one's not til December 5th, so I queued up all the episodes with Stuart in them and, happily, that list is now a lot longer than it was the last time I did so.

I AM NOT AFRAID TO OWN MY RIDICULOUS LITTLE FANGIRL OBSESSION.

I ♥ TBBT 5eva.

Bird goes tweet, and mouse goes squeak.
Cow goes moo. Frog goes croak, and the elephant goes toot.
Ducks say quack and fish go blub, and the seal goes OW OW OW.
But there's one sound that no one knows...

I MISS EVERYONE IN THIS BAAARRRRRRRR

*cries over the old kink meme, Meemaw and her velociraptor, spanon, montycrowley's fic, party posts, etc.*

I still can't believe that shit was four years ago. My first and best fandom.

(Anonymous) 2013-12-01 05:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can't believe I'm still following some of these weirdos on twitter. IT'S BEEN YEARS.

I mean weirdos in the most affectionate sense, of course.

We don't do Thanksgiving in Australia, which seems like a shame on the basis that the food sounds amazing.

But I would like to say, or possibly reiterate, how thankful I am for this fandom.

When I first showed up, some of you gave me shite for being one of the newbies, for not being a BNF, so on and so forth. I was not entirely surprised considering that I basically walked into a very het-oriented fandom (seriously, check the AO3 stats sometime; S/P is on 550 fics, S/A is next on, um, 115, L/P on 70-something, and then the first slash ship is H/R on 73, I think?) and said O HAI HERE HAVE SOME THREEWAY SMUT :D :D :D

The thing that maybe not everyone knows is that when I first got into TBBT, I was not long out of hospital for the first time I'd gone in for depression. Well, I'd been in in June 2010, and my first TBBT fic dates back to February 2011, but all I'd done in fandom in the intervening time was my Yuletide fic. But over the Christmas holiday period I marathoned all of TBBT that I could, and then set about systematically reading damn near everything that was on AO3 at the time, plus the old kink meme.

It was the first thing in months, even though I was technically 'well' and had been allowed to go home from hospital, that I actually gave a shit about. I found, and still find, the show immensely hilarious. (I also find it immensely problematic on so many levels, but this is a thanks comment, not a snark comment.) And, although the fandom was massively more het-fic-centric than I was used to (I come from Red Dwarf; there is almost literally only one pairing there and it's slash), I found that there was some awesome stuff out there.

Now I'm on 300K+ of fic written for this fandom, I don't think I'm a newbie any more, and it's fucking hot here so tl;dr, I love you all, I was going to name names but nah, I just love everyone in this bar and you rock and if I don't tell you that often enough, let this stand as a reminder that you guys did a hell of a lot to pull me out of a fucking dark place in 2010-11 and again this February just past.

Is jealous of your ability to never shut up. I stared at a blank page for 6 hours yesterday. (Then I made cornbread. Fine, have your words. I have two kinds of stuffing and three kinds of potatoes.)

Hey, hey so the reason why I came to LJ is because of BBT, and the reason why I met some of my very favorite people on this planet is because of BBT, and I'm going to be serious here for a second and say (and there's really no way of saying this without a degree of conceitedness ugh) that in school and in creative writing classes I was used to comfortably being the best/one of the best writers, and this is a place that really challenged me to think about how I write, and I think I am a much better writer now than when I walked in this fandom so very long ago.

It's not just the friends, though, or the fact that this place was inundated with ridiculously intelligent and clever and fun people that I admire terribly. I learned so much about everything here? I don't really do fandoms how a lot of people do fandoms - all in, 24/7, hard to focus on anything else - so this was basically my first (and really only) fandom experience. And I am ever so privileged to have shared it with all of you.

And specific thanks to Spanon, without which I would have meandered through the BBT fandom, and kept going, as is my tendency. Silly as it seems, I'd probably be a fairly different person without the people I've met and the things I've learned and the things I've tried to improve about myself re: the learning, all of which can be traced back to these people, this fandom, and that one invitation to an anonymous community one bored and homework-filled night.

So thanks. For everything.

BBT might have let me down, but you guys never did. ♥
